Best Ball for Winter Golf?

Many folks have been taking advantage of our milder winters to extend their golf season. I am frequently asked by my winter golfers, “What’s the best ball to play in cold weather?” I did a little digging with Titleist’s golf ball R&D team. Their suggestion was straightforward…play the same golf ball you typically play.

When it comes to the impact of cold weather, there are two factors to consider: the temperature of the air and the temperature of the golf ball. As we take a closer look at each one, consider what is within your control as a player.

Cold Air: When a golf ball flies through colder air, it loses distance because cold air is denser than warm air. Colder air increases both the lift and drag forces acting on the ball, which result in a slightly higher and shorter trajectory. Can you control the temperature of the air? No, but you can control the shot you choose to create. My advice…recognize your ball will fly higher and shorter than usual and plan your shot/club selection accordingly.

Cold Golf Balls: Distance loss can also result from playing with cold golf balls. If a ball gets too cold, its materials can lose some resiliency, resulting in a reduction of initial velocity off the club face. Can you control the temperature of your golf ball? Somewhat. My advice…if you’re playing in extreme cold, carry a couple of extra golf balls in a warm pocket and rotate them between holes.

Winter golf can be a lot of fun if you are adequately prepared:

  • Take time to warm your muscles before play. If possible, walk to maintain warmth.
  • Dress in layers. A thin wool base layer is best.
  • Invest in a quality down vest. This will be less bulky, allowing greater freedom to swing.
  • Even if the sun is shining, wear your rain pants! This will create a barrier from the wind and further insulate you from the cold.
  • Keep your hands warm…wear winter golf gloves.
  • Wear a hat.
  • Stay hydrated. Carry a thermos of warm tea to sip between holes!
  • If the ground is frozen, bring short tees or tees for use with a golf mat.

With a little extra preparation, you can extend your golf season…and fun…throughout the year!
