Simple Swing Cue

Looking for the perfect swing cue to start your season? One of my favorites is to simply hold your finish. Focusing your attention on a balanced finish improves tempo and often eliminates excess motion that is incompatible with balance. It activates the right hemisphere of your brain while quieting the analytical left hemisphere. Both right and left sides of your brain are important for peak performance. Your left brain helps you analyze what shot is best for a given situation. However, once you have made your shot selection, it is critical to shift from an “analytical focus” to one that is more creative in nature. Imagine the shot your desire…see, feel, and hear it. Then trust your body to create the shot versus micromanaging each of your limbs with a laundry list of commands on how to swing! When I ask students to hold their finish, some will question the purpose. After all, how you move after the ball doesn’t matter since the ball is already gone, right? WRONG. What you do after ball contact is influenced by everything that precedes impact. From the top of the swing to impact is 250ms. The conscious mind cannot influence motion in this short of a time with a club traveling 90-130 mph. So, focus on where you want to end your swing (balanced over the foot closest to your target) and let your subconscious/intuitive right brain do the work for you!
